Our Congratulations to Professor Winship
/We are excited to announce that Professor Ingrid Margaret Winship, AGRF Board member, was awarded an AO in the Queen's Birthday 2020 Honours List on 7th July 2020.
Professor Winship was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for ‘distinguished service to medicine, particularly to clinical genetics and research, to cancer prevention, and as a role model and mentor.’ Asked about what this award meant to her, Professor Winship said, “I feel very fortunate to have received this honour. I am passionate about the work that I do, and especially passionate about encouraging and mentoring younger colleagues.”
The Australian Genome Research Facility (AGRF) welcomed Professor Winship to the AGRF Board in August 2018, where she has provided valuable insight into the Clinical Genomics market. AGRF CEO Kirby Siemering commented, “the entire team at AGRF extend their warmest congratulations to Ingrid on being awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in the 2020 Queen's Birthday Honours. Ingrid has had an outstanding career across many aspects of clinical genetics and research and has made a tremendous contribution to AGRF during her time on the Board.”
Professor Winship has a MBChB (1981), followed by a Doctorate of Medicine (1986), from the University of Cape Town and accreditation as a Clinical Geneticist from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (1995). She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Australasian College of Dermatologists. She has over 35 years’ experience working in medicine and clinical genetics, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to AGRF. Professor Winship’s appointments include Professor of Adult Clinical Genetics at the University of Melbourne and Director of Genomic Medicine, Royal Melbourne Hospital (2006 - current) and Executive Director of Research, Melbourne Health (2006 - 2018), with past senior appointments in New Zealand.
In addition to her professional appointments, Professor Winship is an active member of multiple national and international governing bodies including the Global Variome Board, UK (2016 - current) and chair of the NHMRC Australian Health Ethics Committee (2018 - current). Professor Winship is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is recognised for her strong leadership qualities, being named as Victorian Finalist in Telstra Businesswoman of the Year in 2011, along with other leadership and teaching accolades she has received over the past 30 years.
