Title:   Global pathogen surveillance using NGS and nanopores, and the impact on human health

Abstract:             
Technological advances for next-generation sequencing (NGS) have created an opportunity for rapid, multiscale biological studies of microbes and their hosts, giving scientists and clinicians a more complete view of the functional dynamics of organisms as they interact with the environment. These technologies enable real-time monitoring of pathogens as they emerge within a country or city, and they also have the potential to detect dangerous organisms as they first appear within a city.   Here, we have established a “pathogen weather map,” or “PathoMap,” of the entire New York City (NYC) subway system and several matching areas above ground, as well as piloted these methods in other cities around the world.  To track the microbiotic population and genetic dynamics of the system, we created a mobile app for iOS and Android to allow real-time data entry, GPS-tagging, and timestamps for all collections.
